Manufacturer Description
The world standard in telescope oculars, Meade Series 4000 eyepieces yield the widest possible fields of view, consistent with pinpoint edge-of-field sharpness and long eye relief - and yet with extremely low astigmatism, spherical aberration, and off-axis color. Incorporating 7-layer multi-coatings and edge-blackened optics for optimum image contrast, these sophisticated 4 to 8-element designs permit levels of optical performance generally impossible to achieve with eyepieces of fewer elements. All Series 4000 eyepieces include a soft rubber eyeguard, custom fitted to each eyepiece with a bayonet mount. The eyeguards fold down for eyeglass wearers, and in fact the folded eyeguard shields eyeglasses from coming into contact with the metal eyepiece housings. Rubber grips are provided on all but the three shortest focal length Super Plossl eyepieces.
Designed to utilize the very latest in optical glass types, Meade 4-element Super Plossls are excellent general-purpose eyepieces. For observing hairline lunar and planetary detail, splitting close double stars, or for resolving faint nebulosity in deep-space, Meade Super Plossls optimize the performance of any telescope type, whether it is a f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, f/16 refractor, or f/4 reflector!
Product carries full one year Meade factory limited warranty (within US/Canada only).

Excellent mid-range Plossl
Pros: Cons: Comments:For the money, this is an excellent, mid-range eyepiece. In the long refractors I am using, it is sharp as a tack all over the field. It is nicely made with a smooth barrel (the way I like it). Would definitely recommend to a friend.

Pros: Cons: Comments:I bought this eyepiece for an inexpensive telescope and wanted a low magnification which this eyepiece serves my purpose.

Apr 28, 2008Very good Plossl
Pros:Excellent optics; Beautifully made!
Cons:Normal Plossl eye relief
Comments:I obtained this eyepiece used, primarily to fill in a gap I had in my Plossl eyepieces. It is a solid performer. I would say it is a good step up from the average Plossl. Optics are clear and sharp, color rendition is good, and the light throughput is quite good for a plossl.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
While I don't think it's on a par with a good Orthoscopic, the price difference makes it a good choice! Plossls can be excellent eyepieces. Sometimes it's only in those rare moments of truly excellent seeing that the differences in eyepieces stand out!
I would have no hesitation in recommending this eyepiece!Feb 14, 2008A great general purpose medium-high power eyepiece
Pros:Contrasty sharp images, good coatings
Cons:None really
Comments:Out of all my plossl eyepieces this one is my favorite. I mostly use the 15mm for observing globular clusters such as M13 which it does resolve stars all the way into the core. Internal reflection on bright objects such as Jupiter and the moon is minimal with this eyepiece. In my F/5 Discovery dob I get fairly nice contrast from this eyepiece and the stars stay pinpoint sharp to the edge of the FOV and I really did not detect much coma. Granted the FOV is only 52 degrees it works well. The fit and finish are fairly nice on this eyepiece and I will keep it in my collection. In my scope at a focal length of 1587mm this eyepiece gives me 105X, and it also works well barlowed.

Pros:Not too bad, and on the used market you can buy them on the cheap.
Cons:Not the best out there for that much money new.
Comments:This was the first 15mm eyepiece I owned, before I purchased the Ultra Wide eyepieces on another web site. The stats are: FOV 52 degrees, eye relief 9mm, elements 4, weight 0.3 lbs with the light green tint of fully multi coated optics.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
I found these to be somewhat under-valued at almost $80.00 new. At the time I only had one but sold it away for a wide view eyepiece. To me it was not the quality I had expected, but it was not Japanese, it was Taiwan-made. There are many other better 15mm eyepieces available for less money today. I'd stay away unless you have some Meade eyepieces and wanted to complete the whole set.Sort bySpecifications
