Manufacturer Description

Sky and Telescope's Hot Astronomy Product for 2008! The Baader Planetarium Hyperion 68° Modular Eyepieces offer world-class performance and unique photo-visual features at an unheard of price. No longer do amateurs need to spend more on their eyepieces than their primary instrument, in order to get true high-end performance in a wide-field eyepiece. Not just a different branded version of their highly regarded cousins, the Hyperions have been totally redesigned to deliver better transmission, contrast, and useful new features. Baader Planetarium of Germany has worked hard to give the Hyperions the world's finest optical coatings, superb mechanics, and their unique multifunctional design.

As a visual eyepiece, the Hyperions deliver superb sharpness and color fidelity across their 68° wide, flat-field even in fast telescopes. In comparison to the Pentax XL eyepieces, the Hyperions matched the Pentax in every regard, and at just over 1/3 the price! From their superb on-axis and off-axis sharpness to their pitch-black high contrast field, the Hyperions really work. Viewing through a Hyperion is notably comfortable and relaxing due to their forgiving eye-position, 20mm of eye-relief, extra-large eye lens, and an optical design that is free of annoying 'kidney-beaning' and blackouts.

Some highlights of the Hyperion Eyepieces:

• Consisting of 8 elements in 5 groups (3.5mm - 21mm), the Hyperion optical design delivers outstanding sharpness and color correction over a 68° wide apparent field (65° for the 21mm). The Hyperion optical design has been chosen to deliver a exceptionally comfortable view, thanks to its 20mm of eye-relief, large eyelens, and a pupil free of the kidney-beaning and blackouts common in many wide field eyepieces.

• The new 24mm uses a different optical design and delivers outstanding performance over its 68° wide apparent field. It is totally free of blackouts and other annoying exit pupil behaviors, delivers long eye relief (17mm), virtually zero distortion, and is sharp to the edge even in fast telescopes. Its flat focal plane is particularly suited to very fast newtonians that use coma correctors. The 29mm field stop makes the 24mm Hyperion the widest 24mm eyepiece we know of. The 24mm Hyperion is also the smallest and lightest of the Hyperions.

• High grade water-white glasses are used throughout to deliver a crystal clear view with low scatter and excellent color fidelity, free of the yellow or bluish coloration imparted by many other eyepieces. Use of high-index glasses delivers low distortion and astigmatism, even on scopes as fast as f/4.

• Baader Planetarium has gone to great lengths to give the Hyperions the most advanced multicoatings ever used on amateur telescope eyepieces (please note: these are not the same coatings other manufacturers use on their similar clones of these eyepieces..). The Hyperion Phantom Group multi-coatings and coating equipment are proprietary to Baader and have been designed by German coating engineers specifically for the Baader Hyperions and optimized for each of the glasses used. These coatings are applied with the latest thin-film German coating equipment, training, and process controls. The result are coatings that truly rival the best in the world - including the famous Zeiss Abbe Orthoscopic! The difference is clearly visible - users report that the Hyperions clearly show fainter stars and darker sky than the competitive clones.

• The proprietary Hyperion housings have been engineered by Baader to incorporate careful opto-mechanical design and execution of internal baffling to eliminate stray light and ghost reflections. Uncapping the eyelens reveals a pitch black interior, with no distracting and contrast-robbing glints of light from unbaffled lens or metal surfaces.

• Superb fit and finish - eyepiece barrels are accurate to size, nicely machined, and hard anodized.

• Works in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. The 1.25" barrel is threaded for filters and kept short (0.94") to work well in binoviewers and spotting scopes. Baader's new housing incorporates a full-length 2" barrel (0.94" long) and provides a specially designed tapered locking recess. In addition, the Hyperion field stop locations have been re-designed and optimized to give the shortest focus position possible (important for binoviewer use).

• Soft folding rubber eyecups work for both normal and eyeglass users. Each Hyperion comes with protective lens caps and leatherette storage pouch.

• All Hyperions accept popular Astigmatism Correcting Lenses (not available in the USA though). The Hyperion eyelens housing is compatible with the full range of correcting lenses from 0.25 to 3.5 diopters. Observers with any astigmatism will really appreciate this feature, no longer needing to wear eyeglasses to see stars as true pinpoints. The long 20mm eye relief of the Hyperions works particularly well with these corrector lenses, without forcing the observer to press their eye close to the lens in order to see the entire wide field.

• Removable Negative Lens Element permits variable focal lengths using Baader's new 14mm and 28mm Finetuning Rings (sold separately). NOTE: The 24mm Hyperion is a different optical design and does not permit the use of Finetuning Rings to decrease focal length.

• Great for Binoviewing! Baader has tried most of the wide field eyepieces on the market that are suitable for binoviewing, and the Hyperions are at the top with the very best. When compared to some wide field eyepieces developed especially for binoviewing, they found the Hyperions were superior in every aspect: more comfortable view with better eye relief, smaller housing diameter at the eyelens gives more nose-room, better coatings (=better contrast), wider field, and half the cost. Their favorite wide field bino eyepieces are the 8/13/17/21/24mm Hyperions. The new 24mm Hyperion works superbly in binoviewers, and delivers the widest true field of any 24mm wide field eyepiece. Some users with narrow interocular separation may find it is necessary to remove the thin rubber M54 protective ring in order to increase the 'nose clearance'.

Baader Hyperions incorporate some unique and innovative aspects, which are designed to make them the ideal projection eyepieces for imaging applications:

• The optical design of the Hyperions enables them to work as an extremely sharp wide-field projection eyepiece for even large chip CCD and DSLRs.

• The eyelens barrel has been provided with two different external threads, M43 and M54 (these are covered by the removable rubber eyecups). A wide variety of adapter rings enables cameras to be directly and rigidly close-coupled for afocal projection photography, or variably extended for classical eyepiece projection imaging with T-Adapters and Extension Tubes. A series of 16 threaded rings (sold separately) provides compatibility with just about every digital (CCD/DSLR) and video camera made, even large and heavy 3-chip video cameras.

• The front negative lens element is designed to be removed (and exposes an M48 2" filter thread). This converts each Hyperion into a longer focal length high-quality projection eyepiece, giving the imager two choices of focal length with each eyepiece. NOTE: The 24mm Hyperion is a different optical design and does not contain a removable front element. However, the Front Barrel can still be removed in order to attach 2" filters in-between the 1.25" and 2" barrels. This is particularly convenient for users of 2" filters.

5.0 Excellent Eyepiece Line, Amazing Value

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I recently bought the Baader Hyperion 8 and 13mm eyepieces. I already had the 21mm and this gives a perfect power range. But, all these Hyperion eyepieces are very nice and a unbelievable value. I particularly like the 8mm, very nice wide field of view, sharp to the edge and the blackest, most contrasty views i have ever had through any eyepieces. The view of M97, the OWL nebula and nearby galaxy was the best i have ever had through my 12.5' Astrosystems Telekit. I could make out the eyes in M97 without a filter. I used all three eyepieces last new moon extensively over 3 nights testing and comparing with my Naglers and they are amazing. In my opinion they have better contrast and you can see fainter stars when compared with a Nagler of similar power. I bought these eyepieces on sale for $120 and i think it was the deal of a lifetime. I am so satisfied and pleased with the views. Baader rocks!

2.0 It's ok but nothing special.

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Poor Lens Quality,Difficult To Focus

      Comments:

My Orion XT8-Plus telescope came with an Orion Sirius Plossl 10mm but I wanted something better. I already had a Baader 17mm eyepiece and I love it, so buying the Baader 8mm was an easy choice. I have used it numerous times now side-by-side with the Orion 10mm and I am disappointed with it. Viewing the moon I see no great difference. Viewing planets, it DOES provide a slightly better image than the 10mm but BARELY. I expected more clarity, especially since it is 5x the physical size/weight and 4 times the price. I wouldn't recommend the 8mm but I would buy the 17mm again without hesitation.

4.0 Good quality and good price!

      Pros:

      Good value,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Clear and sharp,Good design

      Cons:

      Heavy

      Comments:

This lens is very good at this price. Has a good build quality and very sharp lens. Is almost without aberrations, but it's possible to see some distortion at borders. I think the quality of Baader is unquestionable.

      4.0 Great eyepiece

      Pros:

      Accurate,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Heavy

      Comments:

The 8mm hyperion is a great eyepiece. It works quite well in my f/5 newt. There is very little if any edge distortion. It is a solid well made eyepiece. The only quibble I have with it is the eyegaurd can pop off quite easily. Otherwise I'd give it 5 stars.

      3.0 Pronounced Field Curvature

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Compact

      Cons:

      Poor Lens Quality

      Comments:

While the rest of the Baader Hyperion line that I own offers excellent views and eye relief, I rarely take this eyepiece out of the bag. The field curvature is pronounced and eye relief limited to the point where, when this magnification is needed, I'd sooner pop on a Barlow lens and work from there. After I've filled out the magnifications I need, I'll be selling off and replacing this eyepiece with another 8mm.

3.0 Good for the price, but not great.

      Pros:

      Wider AFOV,Comfortable Eyepiece

      Cons:

Astigmatism in fast scope,Not so sharp on-axis

      Comments:

For just north of $100, with long eye relief, a large eye lens and a wide 68-degree AFOV, it's not a bad eyepiece, but in faster scopes (f/5 and faster) it shows significant amounts of astigmatism at the edge of the field of view, and in a twenty eyepiece comparison of 7mm and 8mm the Hyperion 8mm came in relatively low in the rankings.

Not a bad eyepiece by any stretch, and several easy to love features, but not top drawer in optical performance on- or off-axis.

      4.0 MMMMMM, OK

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Uncomfortable

      Comments:

I'm a little disappointed in this eyepiece. The pro's are; it's wonderful FOV, ease of focus, sharpness across the field, and it "Barlow's" really well! It's con's...very uncomfortable rubber eyecup, surprisingly poor construction for an eyepiece in this price range, and lack of decent fitting dust caps. Not recommended for any extended viewing sessions. OK, but be aware of these shortcomings in advance and purchase proper eyecup, dust caps, and a decent bolt case to protect your investment! Difficult to grasp the usefulness of the leatherette bag!

5.0 Perfect eyepiece - must have one

      Pros:

      Quality Lenses,Accurate,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Heavy

      Comments:

Really perfect eyepiece. I have "all Hyperion eyepiece", I mean that suitable for my Celestron Nexstar 6" SE, that is 31 - 24 - 17 - 13 - 8 and finally 5 mm. I don't think about Hyperion zoom eyepiece, as other astroamateurs recommend as additional one to decide the optimal magnification in fast way.

      5.0 THE eyepieces to get!

      Pros:

      Quality Lenses,Accurate,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought these lenses to step up from the Plossls I had been using. I agonized over all the decisions there were as far as ep's go. I spent weeks doing my homework first. Boy, did it ever pay off! Looking through these things is like your first taste of chocolate! The FOV and eye relief make them comfortable, easy, fun, and rewarding to use. The images are bright, sharp, and nothing shy of exquisite!
I caught Mars in the 8mm with both fine tuner rings, first thing. I have an eight inch Dob, so the wide FOV made it very simple to aquire my target and track it at 279X (I stepped straight up from a mag of about 60X). Words will never describe the excitement of looking through these ep's, or the quality of the images you get. Also, while researching eyepieces, I kept running across statements like "a wide FOV is not necessary for observing planets." Well, that may be so, but I think the people that make these statements must have mounts that allow for tracking these objects. When using "manual stuff" the wide FOV makes it much easier to aquire and center your target, and allows you to look longer before your target passes from your FOV.
I am a "newbie," so if technical stuff is what you're looking for, there are reviews galore praising these things (that's why I bought them) from people with loads of experience. But, if you are like me, and need to cut through the technical jargain to find a fantastic eyepiece, this is it! I recommend the 8mm with the 21mm and both fine tuner rings. For less than $300 dollars, you will rid your case of your Plossls. If you are on a tight budget, I cannot stress enough that you should wait and save for these things instead of buying some lesser but cheaper ep. You will have these things as long as your in the hobby. Don't bet on wanting to get rid of them. As far as the size and weight go. I don't consider it a drawback. I love the way they feel in the hand and look in the scope! When you see and hold them, it is impossible not to think "quality." The difference between holding one of these and the "tinker toys" I've always played with was shocking at first but in all the right ways. These ARE my eyepeices. I'll never use a Plossl again. Thanks so much Agena!

      5.0 A real favourite

      Pros:

      Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

In a dob this eyepiece will become a real favourite. In deep sky it really pulls out the subject. Averted vision on clusters have the wow factor. An MPCC guarantees those few extra special seconds.

5.0 Simply must have for advanced amateur astronomers

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

I am amateur astronomer with 25 years history. For night sky watching I have new Celestron Nexstar 6SE and I have had problems with my old (bud in excellent condition) set of Plossl oculars of all focal length suitable for visual watching. My friend recommended to me this Hyperion eyepiece and... nowadays I have all of them starting with 5 mm up to 31 mm including Bader Planetarium case for them. This eyepiece is suitable with 1.25" and offer adapter for DSLR camera for projection photography (I mean Baader T-Adapter for Hyperion Eyepieces), the eyepiece is simply great with bright and wide field of view.

      5.0 Excellent Eyepiece

      Pros:

      Usable FOV,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses,Excellent Eye Relief

      Cons:

      Comments:

I currently have four of the Baader Hyperions which I use in my 4" f7.75 APO refractor. The 8mm Hyperion is another top performer in what has turned out to be a great line of eye pieces. This coming from someone with 25 years of observing experience emcompassing everything from Konigs & Orthos to Naglers and Panoptics.

The 8mm is a great compliment to the 17mm in my scope offering up 99x and a .71 degree FOV. Star colors and transmission of fainter DSO objects like globular clusters and galaxies are excellent. Virtually no scatter, ghosting or astigmatism. I would recommend this to anyone using a scope with a longer f ratio. I can not attest to it's performance in anything faster yet.

5.0 The Star of my collection

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

After switching to Hyperions, I am hooked. I purchased the 8mm to be the "high mag" component of my setup. Indeed, when barlowed in my 10" dobsonian it approximates the 30x per inch that is often recommended as a maximum. The field is clean, crisp and error-free. I have purchased an optional adapter ring to couple this eyepiece with my digital camera and while there is some vignetting, the image quality of moon and planetary shots exceeded my expectations. This eyepiece certainly delivers more than what you pay for!

      5.0 Baader 8mm Hyperion

      Pros:

Excellent Characteristics,Great value for the price

      Cons:

Slight Coma,Large and bulky for 8mm

      Comments:

For those of you that have trouble buying high dollar eyepieces I would suggest you take a serious look at the 8mm Hyperion. This eyepiece is a great performer on all objects I used it on. While it's definitely not a Nagler or Pentax XL, for the money it's a terrific buy. It's a terrific overall, general use eyepiece for price performing well on planets, the Moon, and DSOs alike.

The eyepiece is sturdy and ruggedly built with great fit & finish. It is a large eyepiece that's as large as some of my 2" eyepieces but not exceptionally heavy for its bulk (13.5oz) and, in fact, fits 2" focusers with its new housing that has a full-length 2" barrel with a tapered locking recess. It also has the advantage of being used as a 6.9, 6, 5, and 4.3mm eyepiece by using extensions. In rough field measurements, I confirmed the 68

      5.0 Nice Eyepiece!

      Pros:

      Comfortable Eyepiece,Quality Lenses,Versatile,Accurate

      Cons:

      Heavy

      Comments:

I bought this after I purchased their 21mm and liked it. Like the 21mm, this gives a broad flat field with pinpoint stars out to near the edge with my 14" F/4.7 Dob. I can see a bit of distortion at the edge, but less than my other eyepieces. That and the adapters to make it a 5mm etc, and it is very versatile. I hope to buy the 3mm next.

      5.0 Great eyepiece

      Pros:

      Comfortable Eyepiece,Quality Lenses,Accurate,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Comments:

While not a Nagler but nearly as good as a Pan at half the price these eyepieces rock. No better bang for the buck. Actually compaired to my friends Pan or my Baader, with a Paracorr there was no difference that I could see. Not an 80 degree eyepiece but it doesn't cost what an 80 degree eyepiece does either. Very good eyerelief, works well for us eye glasses wearers. There is not a better eyepiece for anywhere near this price. Very little coma even in my f4.5 scope. You have to really look for it. I love them so much I have bought the 24mm, 17mm, and 8mm and as soon as I can scrape up the cash I'll add the 13mm, 21mm, and the 5mm. You'll have to spend over $250 an eyepiece to beat these and then you would barely be beating them. I whole heartedly reccomend these eyepieces.
