Televue Zoom 8mm-24mm (click stop)
Pros:Many eyepieces in one, not too heavy, nice eye relief for eyeglass wearers.
Cons:Pricey, narrow FOV, some edge distortion.
Comments:This was the most interesting eyepiece I borrowed at a recent star party. I've never used one before and I am a believer in Televue quality. I was not disappointed. The biggest negative with this eyepiece is the narrow field of view which is 40 degrees.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
To be honest, I found the edge sharpness acceptable and the contrast was excellent. The last 5% or so of the view suffered from some edge distortion, but it was not that noticeable in my f/10 SCT. What is nice is that you can focus on an object at 24mm (Jupiter for example) and then bring it up closer dropping down to the 8mm stop. The stop works well and you can hear the click as you go through the mm stops. This is a nice feature if you don't want to spend too much money on different EPs.
The cost new is $180 with a nice eye relief of 16mm, with 7 glass elements and a 1.25" barrel. Fully multicoated, it comes with end caps in a box. At 1/2 pound this eyepiece won't bother your scope with a balance problem no matter what the scope size which is also nice.Jun 30, 2007Good concept but pricey
Pros:Good quality, good performance
Cons:Small AFOV, heavy, pricey
Comments:As zooms go, the Click-Stop zoom is a good one. The optics are good quality but there are other brands that use basically the same optics that are cheaper. The click-stop feature is nice for tuning to a particular magnification quickly, especially if you use these in a binoviewer, but they are big and heavy....so for binos you might want to consider a fixed focal length eyepiece. There was some color distortion towards the edge of the field of view. Yet, stars were points out to the edge in my F8 scope. I never got a chance to try the zoom in the F5 ST80, so I can't offer comments on how the zoom does in fast scopes.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
There are cheaper alternatives available in zooms, and I found I prefer a fixed focal length wide-angle eyepiece as opposed to the zoom. I just add Powermates to the wide-angles when I want to magnify the image.Sort by
