TAL Super Plossl 25mm
Pros:Not expensive, very nice eye relief, works better in slow scopes, barlows well.
Cons:Raised top lens, needs an eye guard.
Comments:I recently had a chance to observe with this eyepiece at a recent star party. It is a Russian eyepiece and a decent one it is. This eyepiece comes with a purchase of a Russian TAL refractor or can be bought separately for $59. It has a plossl's typical 52 degree field of view, excellent eye relief of 19mm and 4 glass elements.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
In my slow f/10 scope it showed excellent views, but the background was never really black. It was more like a dark brown at best. I believe the Russian glass had something to do with this. Others at the star party also believed this to be the case. Contrast was very good. Another interesting feature was that the top eyeglass lens is slightly raised and one should be very careful with the coating. A eye guard (like Orion's) should be considered if using this EP often. This EP also barlows very well.
There is some sea-gulling effect of the stars in the last 20% of the FOV, but it didn't bother me that much. This is a very interesting eyepiece to view through, and from the many eyepieces at the party, it was the only Russian eyepiece there.Sort by
