Why Buy A Hybrid Star Diagonal?
Pros:Turns a toy scope into a usable scope.
Cons:Not as bright as mirror diagonals.
Comments:Like many amateur astronomers, my first telescope was a department store scope. Most of these scopes were equipped with .965" focusers and eyepieces to match. In retrospect, I often wonder how I was able to see anything through those tiny eyepieces.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
When I finally upgraded to a "real" telescope, I began to gather a collection of "full size" 1 1/4" eyepieces. I decided to see what, if anything these eyepieces could do if used with my little 60mm refractor.
Orion's Hybrid Prism Star Diagonal turned a telescope that was barely more than a toy into an actual scientific instrument. With standard eyepieces in the scope, it gives nice views of the moon and planets, double stars and some Deep Space Objects. Though not as light-efficient as a mirror diagonal, the diagonal prism with coated transmission surfaces provides nice bright, sharp images. The well constructed housing has a single lock screw for eyepieces.
In conclusion, Orion's .965"/1.25" Hybrid Prism Star Diagonal can turn a cheap telescope into a telescope you can enjoy using.Aug 31, 2007Orion .965"/1.25" 90 degree Prism Diagonal
Pros:Serves a real need; All metal housing; Can use 1.25" eyepieces with .965" diagonal.
Cons:None.
Comments:Yes, I do actually have a need for this type diagonal. Several years ago I found a Meade 285, 900mm, f/15 telescope at an outlet store. This little scope relaunched my interest in astronomy and got me going again in this wonderful hobby. Therefore, after knocking it over in an accident I had to replace the diagonal. Where on earth was I going to find a .965" to 1.25" hybrid diagonal? Orion of course.....the unit cost me about $25 and the little Meade is operational.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
If you have scope that uses the older .965" focuser and want to be able to use your 1.25" eyepieces, buy this diagonal while you can.
Put that idle, decorative scope to use!Sort by
