Orion 1.25" Mirror Star Diagonal (Japan)
Pros:Solid build construction; Recess cut into focus barrel; Built in Japan.
Cons:No brass compression ring; No longer offered in catalogs.
Comments:I was lucky enough to scoop two of these diagonals before they disappeared from the Orion catalog, and were replaced by Chinese alternatives. We've come to expect better than average products from Japan and this diagonal does not disappoint. The diagonal has the unusual shape of two circular barrels coming together to form a "T" shape housing for the mirror. The construction is very solid with no rattles, and appears to be made of solid metal with a black matte gray finish. The focus end of the diagonal's barrel has an undercut to keep the unit from accidentally falling out of the focuser when tilted toward the zenith. A captive screw is used to hold the ocular instead of a compression ring that has become common on most quality diagonals these days.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
There is a very solid feel to this diagonal, and the views are as pristine as the ones I've seen through my Astro-Tech and William Optics diagonals, though these are 2" formats. If my memory serves me well, I think I remember reading that this diagonal was made by Vixen of Japan for Orion. It definitely has their build quality written all over it.
If you have an opportunity to pickup one of these diagonals on the used market, please do so. I don't think you'll be disappointed.Sort by
