Manufacturer Description
The Meade Series 4000 8mm-24mm Zoom Eyepiece (1.25") # 07199-2 is an excellent addition to telescopes of all types, brands, and price levels from entry level to research grade. A terrific value, especially useful for terrestrial observation to zoon in on potentially moving wildlife.
Offers the ability to change magnifications "on the fly" yet demanding no compromise in performance. The eyepiece’s internal optics move on smooth, precisely machined surfaces which maintain optical collimation at all continuously variable zoom settings. The 6-element 4 group design has 15-18mm of eye relief, and provides an apparent field of view of 40° at 24mm, increasing to an apparent field of view of 60° at the highest power 8mm setting. All lenses are multi-coated for maximum light transmission and image contrast, while minimizing internal reflections.
Features a precision made 1.25" barrel, and fold down eyeguard for comfortable viewing and blocking stray light. The Series 4000 8mm-24mm Zoom Eyepiece (1.25") offers a complete focal length range from 8mm to 24mm (in a single eyepiece) without sacrificing resolution compared to fixed focal length oculars.
Product carries full one year Meade factory limited warranty (within US/Canada only).
Please Note: Zoom eyepieces will often produce a ratting sound when shaken. This is due to the clearances required for moving parts of the zoom mechanism, and does not indicate defects or lose lenses. This sound is especially prominent in Meade zoom eyepieces, but this is normal.

Feb 5, 2017Very nice for the price!
Pros: Cons: Comments:I was looking for an quality upgrade for my Orion Explorer II 7‑21mm Zoom but didn't want to break the bank. My buddy Dave in Vermont on SGL turned my on to the Meade as a high quality affordable zoom. I picked one up and hadn't looked back since! I was quite pleased with the top-notch optics (6 elements, 4 groups, fully multi-coated) and smooth zoom action with little refocusing necessary, camera-like really. Minimal fringing on bright objects. It was little stiff at first but loosened up after a few uses. It's a bit heavier than my other EPs but it's not a problem. However, the extra weight may be a consideration depending on your setup. I would highly recommend this to a friend and for those who don't want to have to shell out the big bucks for a quality zoom eyepiece.

Dec 19, 2016Not bad at all!
Pros: Cons: Comments:This is really a pretty cool and affordable zoom. The optics a really not as bad as you might have been taught. I haven't used it a whole lot. When I have used it, I really couldn't tell that much of a difference between this and other medium priced EP's I have. Mine also has what I believe is a T2 thread if you remove the eye cup. I've used that to attach a ZWO camera. Funny that I've never seen that feature in any of the descriptions of this EP. All in all this is really great for the cost, I wouldn't be surprised if some folks use it 80% of the time.

Jun 16, 2016Works excellent; Meade Infinity 102mm Refractor Telescope
Pros:Accurate,Easy to Use,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses,Compact
Cons: Comments:This is my very first zoom eyepiece and since I'm new to Astronomy I decided to try out this just for the purpose of not using too many eyepieces in a one night single viewing. It turned out to be a great choice.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I very recently upgraded from my Meade 90mm Telescope and purchased another, this time Meade Infinity 102mm AZ Refractor Telescope and to my surprise the zoom eyepiece works very well indeed. The Zoom is smooth and nice transition from 24mm on up to 8mm and very, very little focal adjustments needed. You actually do have a wide field of view even when its zoomed in to 8mm. I've looked at Saturn and was really amazed how well you can see and very comfortable too. I set Saturn at the bottom of the eyepiece and have quite a good viewing time approx 30 seconds or more before I have to make some minor adjustments to get it back into focus.
I used it on my Meade Infinity 90mm Telescope and it was not that great, when you zoom in to approx 10mm and above it tends to show a bit blurred. At 24x to 11x zoom its awesome i.e. with my 90mm telescope.
In my personal and humble opinion I think this zoom eyepiece will work wonders when placed in any Telescope with a 102mm diameter and above. Anything smaller than 102mm may or may not perform and do justice to this magnificent zoom eyepiece.
SOME DETAILS OF THE EYEPIECE;
- The full length of the eyepiece is 4 3/16".
- Eye relief is 1/2" long and very comfortable.
- The eyepiece lens is 15/16" wide, quite comfortable to view.
- The end which goes into the focuser or diagonal seems to be made with metal like chrome. It does not feel like metal but I believe it is.
- The diameter of the body is 1 5/8".
- The zoom feature moves rather smoothly once you tighten it properly on to the diagonal or focuser. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Mar 22, 2015Good eyepiece, first one had a defect
Pros: Cons: Comments:First one I was sent had two obvious defects in the internal glass.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Agena was easy to work with. Sent them the eyepiece back, they credited me the shipping fees, and shipped me a new one once the defect was received. Took about 2 weeks in turn around time.
The second unit I received was flawless and is a really nice eyepiece. I'm really happy with it. Great views, especially for the price! This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
May 30, 2013Excellent all rounder Zoom
Pros:Compact,Easy to Use,Quality Lenses,Lightweight,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:I bought this lens against a background of zoom lenses not being that great unless you spend lots of cash.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I have to say this lens is now permenantly fixed to my Mak 127 and I actually dont use any of my other lenses, in fact I am considering selling them on.
Two nights ago I saw stunning images of Saturn through this lens. It makes viewing easy by having the ability to quickley zoom to the maximum the sky conditions will allow. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com

May 30, 2013Good addition to EP collection
Pros:Easy to Use
Cons:Heavy
Comments:The Meade 8-24 zoom eyepiece is a reliable performer. It is good for grab-n-go when I don't want to bring multiple eyepieces. It is also good for getting a feel for which regular eyepiece will be best with seeing conditions at the time, but sometimes I just keep using the zoom and not bother changing the EP.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
It is on the heavy side for my 60mm alt/az refractor, but is not a problem at all in my 6" dob. It's FOV is not as wide as my regular EPs, and it does require some refocusing when changing focal length(magnification). But overall it is a solid addition to my astronomy toolbox. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Feb 17, 2013Great allrounder
Pros:Lightweight,Easy to Use,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction
Cons:None
Comments:I have been using this lens for a few weeks and it has now become my favorite, permenantly attached to my scope. I also have Meade 4000 fixed lenses the zoom is as good if not better than these.

Nov 5, 2011Great value for money and quality
Pros:Easy to Use,Compact,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:Surprisingly useful and great quality. Very handy eyepiece for most viewing of an evening. Great for beginners to help figure out the powers required for different observing.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesThis review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
May 22, 2011Good Quality
Pros: Cons: Comments:I'd never owned a zoom eyepiece before thinking the quality would be inferior to most single focal length eyepieces.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The Meade 4000 series 1.25" zoom eyepiece proved me wrong, and shows clarity of detail at 8mm that surpasses what is seen in my orthoscopic and RKE eyepieces.
A very slight yellow fringe can be observed on the edge of the moon, but otherwise stellar images look fine with no fringing. A slight bit of refocusing may be needed when going through the zoom range.
My single focal length eyepieces mostly stay in the case now. The Meade zoom is just too convenient to use. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Nov 24, 2009Meade 8mm-24mm Zoom Eyepiece
Pros:- compact size
Cons:
- infinitely variable focal length between 8 and 24
- reasonably affordable- no cap or case
Comments:
- eyecup to stiff to roll down
- mechanism way too stiffI thought this eyepiece would make a handy addition to my collection, especially for use with my wide-field spotter scope that I piggyback on my main 8" SCT. It allows for a continuous variation in eyepiece focal length from 8 to 24mm (no click stop). It is supposed to be based on the Meade 4000 series Plossl eyepiece optics technology. It has an okay apparent field of view (55deg @ 8mm down to 40deg @ 24mm) and a healthy eye relief of 16mm. It is a compact piece, making it handy for grab-and-go. Sounded not bad, and for a not bad price of $125USD, so I bought one.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
The manufacturer description says that it has a fold down rubber eyecup, but mine came with this stiff unfoldable thing. It also comes in a simple flimsy box, with no bolt case and no cap for the looky end. The mechanism for changing focal length is extremely stiff. I had to kind of crack-it, and then go back and forth to work it in a bit, but it is still very stiff...so stiff that the whole eyepiece rotates in the telescope when you try to turn it with one hand. A pain. I also found the view to be not so spectacular. I purchased at the same time a Meade 5000 Series Plossl 26mm and I already had a Televue Radian 10mm. The views through these two eyepieces is so superior to the zoom eyepiece, that I can't see myself ever using it now. Made in China...you get what you pay for.Sort bySpecifications
