Manufacturer Description
Meade's Illuminated MA12mm Astrometric Eyepiece is very useful for astrophotographers who need to lock onto guide stars, or for observers aligning their telescope or making astronomical measurements. The etched reticle pattern is internally red illuminated to stand out against a dark sky.
This specialty ocular is a high precision eyepiece with four different illuminated scales for making astronomical measurements. With this versatile eyepiece, you can measure double star separations and position angles, planetary diameters, lunar crater diameters, and more. It also includes a double-crossline scale for guiding during astrophotography.
This wireless model includes a red LED illuminator, variable brightness control and batteries. Please note that while the product photo above shows a silver illuminator, this can be black or silver in color depending on Meade's stock.

High Quality For Astrometrics
Pros: Cons: Comments:Solid piece of kit for the advanced user. Excellent instructions for a variety of apps. Note that the dual crosshairs are off-center for guiding use; not for polar alignment. Illumination is very adjustable. A fine astrometric instrument.

May 27, 2019Essential reticle for alignment
Pros: Cons: Comments:The reticle etching is beautiful, and useful for making astrometric measurements. It gets more use as a nice, illuminated source of cross hairs when I am performing alignment.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
It's difficult to get a cap to stay on the eyecup, but that's not a deal breaker for me. The laser is a little too powerful too; pretty often I have to turn off the laser to see 'behind' it.
Overall, a nice, useful bit of equipmentThis review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Apr 20, 2018Excellent product at good price
Pros: Cons: Comments:I bought this eyepiece for double star observing. It’s good optically and the scales are useful. Batteries are included. I agree with the comments that it is a bit bright when fully dimmed. I did buy the top cap from Agena.

Dec 24, 2016Good but a little too bright
Pros: Cons: Comments:Good product all around, lots of options for determining angles and arc distance. But even at the lowest light setting it is plenty bright, it'd be nice if it could be set a lot dimmer

Oct 1, 2016Works well for centering alignment stars
Pros:Quality Lenses,Easy to Use
Cons: Comments:This replaced an older, wired, Meade double-crosshair reticle eyepiece that I use for centering stars during alignment. Not having a wire trailing to a battery pack is much more convenient and reliable. The quality of the lens was also an improvement, being sharper, brighter, and wider in field. I chose the astrometric version because I also want to use it in my classes to have students make measurements, but I find that it works well for alignment, since the center is marked with a small circle, and the radial lines help with moving the star into a position where it will then drift through the center.

Feb 26, 2015Great Double Star EP
Pros:Compact,Lightweight,Quality Lenses,Accurate,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:I purchased this for measuring the separation and position angle of double stars, and, after calibrating, this does the job nicely. There is a good deal of material on the Internet about how to use these astrometric units (two others have been or are on the market), so I won't be too critical of Meade's rather meager instruction sheet. I am also planning to use it to measure lunar features. Fortunately this is a well made product, since there are few available new!

Jan 30, 2015Works very well
Pros:Accurate,Easy to Use,Quality Lenses
Cons:Too Bright Illumination
Comments:I purchased this eyepiece to measure the separation of double stars, and it works very well. Using the included instructions, it was easy to calibrate. Comparing my measurements to those listed for several double stars, the eyepiece appears to be very accurate. The eyepiece itself is of very good quality. My only complaint is that, even at the lowest setting, the illumination is a bit too bright, making it difficult to see very dim stars. Otherwise, I would give it 5 stars.

Jun 11, 2011Clear engravinng, scales easy to read
Pros:Strong Construction,Accurate,Compact,Quality Lenses,Linear 50 div direct read
Cons: Comments:I use it for measuring double stars separation and position angle. Easy to use, clear engraving, LED light easy to control from dim to bright. 50 linear scale divisions and protector scale are clear. Should have supplied with an external 360 protractor attachment.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes

May 28, 2011A Must Have Eyepiece
Pros:Quality Lenses,Compact,Accurate,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:This eyepiece helps in telescope alignment and calibration. It can be used night or day. It works well for manual guiding of a telescope. I keep it in my eyepiece case because I never know when I might need it. Great product.
