Manufacturer Description

Even before the disappearance of the famed Baader Genuine Orthoscopics in mid-2012, Baader Planetarium sought to develop a set of true Planetary eyepieces that was accessible for any amateur - without breaking their bank. Foregoing fancy (and costly) cosmetics, the new Classic Eyepieces deliver where it counts - performance. Their sharpness and contrast rival other 'planetary' eyepieces costing much more. To achieve this performance and value, Baader drew upon their extensive in-house knowledge and experience, combined with optical designs and processes leveraged from Zeiss.

Features of the new Classic Eyepieces:

  • Optical design and manufacturing specs based on the highly regarded Zeiss Jena 0.965" orthoscopics (not any Japanese or Chinese makes).
  • Fully multi-coated: All air-to-glass surfaces are coated with Baader's HT MultiCoatings, specifically matched to each substrate.
  • Excellent ergonomics: The innovative recessed volcano top provides clearance for eyelashes and enables a comfortably located eyepoint without the stray light problems of a full volcano top.
  • Integrated winged folding rubber eyecup: Eliminates distracting stray side-light, enabling full concentration on the object, as well as providing a thermally insulating and soft non-scratching top surface (ie, for eyeglass wearers). Also outstanding for BinoViewing. Rubber eyecup may be folded down or removed, if needed .
  • 52-deg apparent field of view (6/10/18mm Orthoscopics): Makes finding and centering objects at high powers easier than typical 40-45deg eyepieces.
  • Blackened lens edges; Parfocal.
  • Threaded to accept standard 1.25" astronomy filters.

      4.0 Good

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

Generally pleased with this small eyepiece. As with most high mag pieces, it's best on clear good seeing nights. Focus requires some precision so if your focuser has fine adjustment all the better. I was concerned the relatively narrow 50-degree field of view would need a lot of nudging and adjustment with my Dobson reflector to track the moon and planets but it's not an issue. The view is bright and well contrasted. Eye relief is adequate but not for eyeglass wearers I think. The eyeshade is helpful when your neighbor's lights are on but can get in the way sometimes. Others report seeing good detail on galaxies with this piece but it has to be on a dark clear night, otherwise, I almost always switch to my 9mm Plossl.

      5.0 The best planetary eyepiece

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I had already bought all Baader Morpheus, but I was surprised at the views provided by this eyepiece.
I will certainly buy other orthocopics.

      5.0 Incredible Planetary Eyepiece!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

Probably the best view of Saturn I’ve ever had was through this 6mm ortho in a Sky-Watcher ProED 100mm APO. I could easily see the Cassini Division within the rings, and the planetary disc was bright, with rich contrast and tack-sharp clarity. A picture-perfect, stunning image with beautiful natural color! Though I typically prefer longer eye-relief, I didn’t find the short eye-relief to be a problem at all. Also love the eyecup, I think it works great. The 18mm and 10mm versions are also amazing eyepieces; true planetary gems!

You can’t go wrong with the Baader Classic Orthoscopics. Get them all, worth every penny!

5.0 Excellent Eyepiece in my 8" F6 Dob

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I ordered this eyepiece after a lot of searching for what my first eyepiece (other than the two that came with my scope) should be. It's a great eyepiece and I'll be ordering at least one more from this line of classic orthos.

      5.0 Finally!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has loved the ortho sharpness but wished someone would push out the field stop just a bit to find objects and frame them better. Well thank you Baader for doing just that.
I also have a Fujiyama 5mm and see no drop in image quality when switching to the Baader. By the way, the edge of field is still very good in my f/6 refractor.
Another clever feature is that the lens cap is large enough to accommodate the folded down eye guard.
      Very happy with this purchase.

      5.0 A Very Impressive Eyepiece!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This eyepiece is really excellent! Super sharp with a good FOV. I wish the eye relief were better but I can live with that considering how well it performs. The eye shields work very well! I wish Baader made a 5mm now.

      5.0 Excellent planetary eyepiece

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

Paired with a C6, this EP is excellent for studying fine lunar detail. Eye placement and eye relief are spot on. I like how the barrel is neither tapered or stepped. Very compact and lightweight too.

5.0 Big power in a small package!

      Pros:

      Sharp,Quality Lenses,Compact,High Contrast,Lightweight,Accurate,Strong Construction,Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

Have you ever heard of the expression less is more? That is exactly the approach with this BCO 6mm eyepiece. Orthoscopics come with a small field of view and a small eye relief, well pretty much a small package all around. The simple yet high quality lenswork in this Classic Ortho from Baader has given me the highest contrast and sharpest views to date of both Saturn and Jupiter.

      5.0 Best planetary eyepiece ever

      Pros:

      Accurate,Lightweight,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Easy to Use,Compact

      Cons:

      Comments:

Bought it as a replacement for 6-mm Plossl, just wanted to try orthoscopic design. It is the best eyepiece for planets ever. Comparing to good Plossl, it has more comfort eye relief, very felicitous volcano-top design (just as old Kokusai Kohki orthos have), and the perfect eyeshade. Speaking of image quality - it is brighter, crisper than an e.g. Vixen 6-mm NPL (also very good eyepiece), and it has very big FOV for an orthoscopic - 50 degrees. If to compare with Kokusai Kohki orthos (I have 9mm one) - Baader has better coating and slightly brighter. The crispness is the same. Good job, Baader!

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Accurate,Lightweight,Compact,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Difficult To Focus

      Comments:

Reduced field of view but excelent images quality. From a good price it's an excelent aquisition.

      4.0 Baader 6mm classic ortho

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Quality Lenses,Accurate,Lightweight,Compact

      Cons:

      Comments:

After failing to see Antares companion with my planetary eyepiece one night, I placed an orthoscopic eyepiece of same focal length in the focuser, and there it was. Going back and forth with those eyepieces showed the simple design of the ortho won out in cleaning up the image to reveal the much fainter companion. After using the Baader 6mm for some time now I am sold on these eyepieces. I sold the planetary eyepieces.
