Following the advice of William A. Paolini in his article "Using Filters for Lunar/Planetary Observation" https://www.cloudynights.com/articl...-filters-for-lunarplanetary-observation-r3261
I stacked the Baader Semi APO, Meade variable polarizer, and a #82A blue filter (I don't have the #80A that was suggested) along with a 2X barlow lens in an attempt to extract some cloud detail from Venus using my ASI224mc attached to my Orion 127mm Mak. I actually got a hint of something! I may have gotten more if I had used the #80A which would have darkened the image quite a bit at only 28% transmission (compared to the 73% of the #82A):

I hope to get the Baader Johnson U or perhaps the Astrodon U Venus someday and really get some serious cloudband!

Reggie, I think your image is really good, and I do see the detail. Bill P has posted many articles over the years with solid information.

I have been wanting to image Venus but have not due to lack of time and energy, and/or weather. The next couple of weeks look promising for me, and hopefully the weather will cooperate. Keeping my fingers crossed.

The last time I imaged Venus was in 2018, and had pretty good success. In 2012 I sketched an observation of Venus that caught detail. I used both #80A and UHC filters, probably stacked, for that one. When I did the 2018 image I used a ZWO 850nm IR Pass filter. I tried a 685nm filter with poor results. The #47 Wratten, which is reputed to be an excellent filter for Venus, turned out to be a huge disappointment for visual and imaging.

    I hope the following help:

    Subject: Venus
    Date: 06/16/2018
    Time: 21:00hr DST (06/17/2018 01:00 UT)
    Location: Miami, Florida 25.61N 80.42W
Conditions: Not good, heavy haze and moisture.
    Instrument: TV-85
    Camera: ZWO ASI290MC
    Filter: ZWO 850nm
Focal Ratio: f/21 using 3x Barlow
    Capture Image Size: 1936x1096
    Frames: 33sec Video
    Capture Software: SharpCap 2.9

    Notes:
    - Conditions not favorable, image shimmering.
    - Very large and heavy haze visible around moon.
    - Stacked using 20% frames.
    - Mild sharpening and gamma.
    - Attempts with 685nm and #47 Wratten results
    questionable.

Thanks, Ed. Nice sketch! Also, thanks for your detailed imaging notes. I found an Antlia UVenus filter at around $200 on telescopes.net that I'm waiting on. I look forward to playing around with that one :p

I did some reading and this looks like a good Venus filter. I'm looking forward to your images with that filter.
